Christmas Break #1

KatieKate and the fam are on vacation, but I thought I’d leave you with a few of my favorite reads down memory lane.  The first is a conversation that still makes me laugh… every time I pass that bridge or see a flock of birds or hear the words ‘hunter safety’.  Every time.  I laugh until I’m crying.

it’s a beautiful summer night
two best friends are walking through a downtown jazz fest
people watching, dreaming, wandering
past the grand hotel, past the romantic civic theater built in the 40s
onto a deserted walkway bridge with a empty bench overlooking the river
a lone fisherman is down in the moonlit water casting
a light breeze is blowing, the friends are sitting close together…alone…talking
a family of ducks below are preparing for an evening flight
the girl sits up and takes it all in
the birds take to the air quietly
‘I love summer. Smell that?’ she says, ‘it’s so…’

‘BAM! BAM! BAM! BAMBAMBAM! Rattattattat!!!’ screams the sound-effect-obssessed boy as the ducks soar overhead

‘perfect.’ she finishes, deflated…and a bit scared

‘You wanna take hunter-safety this fall?’ he asks innocently

they walk home
